The flat needle is extremely important to the operation of the #828 lantern. As you turn the red knob, the needle is moved through the nipple at the top of the lantern, cleaning out any obstruction that may have lodged there. One flat needle replacement comes with the OEM Parts Kit that ships with each lantern. If your flat needle breaks, you can still use a manual pick to clean the nipple.
